Gravenhurst council has approved a resolution directing staff to provide regular updates on business retention and attraction efforts, addressing public concern over vacant storefronts and the downtown’s health.

The resolution, brought forward by councillor Peter Johnston at a recent meeting, builds on the town’s existing Economic Development Strategic Plan and initiatives approved last October. These include a Vacant Building and Land Registry bylaw, year-round intake for the Community Improvement Plan (CIP), a review of the Official Plan with a stronger focus on commercial activity, and zoning updates to support traditional retail and downtown businesses.

Johnston emphasized the motion reinforces current efforts rather than creating new policy. “There’s been a lot of noise on social media suggesting council isn’t doing anything, and that’s simply not true,” he said.

He acknowledged challenges in the downtown core, noting he has personally visited vacant properties and spoken with owners to understand closures, many of which are beyond the town’s control. Johnston has also shared a business retention strategy with staff to support ongoing economic development.

Councillor Penny Varney noted the Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce is concerned and plans to meet with business owners to explore ways to revitalize the Business Improvement Area. Council agreed that public-facing updates on business efforts will demonstrate progress and keep residents informed.
