A once empty room at The Alexander Muskoka Residence has been transformed into a vibrant tribute to Muskoka’s natural beauty, thanks to resident artist Tristan Destura.
Originally from the Philippines and a professional artist for nearly 25 years, Destura has worked internationally as a muralist, former art professor, portrait coffee artist and chef artist. Now based in Gravenhurst, he recently completed a large-scale mural inside the residence’s Reflection Room – a project inspired by the harsh winter storm that hit the region in 2025.
While residents remained safe indoors, many missed the lake views and outdoor spaces that define Muskoka life. The mural was designed to “bring the outside in,” capturing familiar landmarks including the Muskoka Wharf, steamships RMS Segwun and Wenonah II, historic boathouses, Muskoka chairs and the Gravenhurst Narrows Lighthouse.
The nearly 300-hour project was painted primarily overnight and presented technical challenges, with some sections requiring up to 10 layers of paint.
“Whether enjoyed individually in peaceful solitude or shared among groups during activities, the mural has truly come to life through the people who experience it each day,” says Destura. “For me, that is the greatest fulfillment – creating something that not only beautifies a space but genuinely brings people together.”
