The Gravenhurst Curling Club celebrated a milestone in accessibility and inclusion recently with the official opening of its new wheelchair-accessible entrance. Mayor Heidi Lorenz and fellow council members joined club officials, local Special Olympians, and community guests for a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The project was made possible through a federal Enabling Accessibility Fund grant and a donation of materials from Gravenhurst Home Building Centre.

“This project is about more than access to a building – it’s about belonging,” said Joanne Chase, president of the Gravenhurst Curling Club. “We are proud to support our Special Olympians, remove barriers, and ensure that everyone who wants to curl here can do so with dignity and ease.”

The timing is particularly meaningful as the GCC celebrates its 125th anniversary this year, marking over a century of curling, community, and commitment to inclusion. Club officials say the new entrance strengthens the club’s role as a hub for athletes and members of all abilities, ensuring curling remains accessible to everyone for generations to come.
