Muskoka Novel Marathon invites writers to 25th season
Registration is now open for the 2026 Muskoka Novel Marathon, a 72-hour creative writing challenge that raises funds for adult literacy programs across Muskoka. The milestone 25th anniversary edition runs Thursday, July 16 to Sunday, July 19, 2026, at the Port Sydney Community Hall and online via Zoom, bringing together writers from across the region and beyond to draft an entire novel in a single weekend.
“This year marks a quarter century of toiling over our keyboards for 72 hot summer hours,” says K.M. Wehrstein, marathon convenor, noting the event has helped launch literary careers and raised significant support for literacy services. “For many it has been life changing.”
The marathon offers both in-person participation ($100) and virtual entry ($25), with only 40 in-person spots available. Registration includes meals and refreshments, and participants can also purchase 25th anniversary merchandise.
Writers may compete in Best Novel or Best Spanish Language Novel categories, working solo or in pairs. While submissions are optional, manuscripts can be reviewed by a panel including editors, librarians, and professional writers, with winning entries forwarded to publishers or literary agents.
Funds raised support adult literacy services delivered by YMCA Simcoe Muskoka in Huntsville and surrounding communities, which organizers say are essential for employment, independence, and quality of life. To register or learn more, visit www.muskokanovelmarathon.com.
