New pedestrian crossings set for Port Carling and Bala
The District of Muskoka is moving ahead with plans to install three new pedestrian crossings in the Township of Muskoka Lakes this summer to improve safety and accessibility for residents and visitors.
In Port Carling, a pedestrian crossover equipped with overhead signs and flashing lights will be installed on Muskoka Road 118 (Frank Miller Memorial Route) near Stephen Road. Construction is expected to begin as early as June, with the crossing anticipated to be operational by late summer.
Two additional pedestrian crossings will be built in Bala at the intersections of Gordon Street and Muskoka Road 169 and Portage Street and Muskoka Road 169. Both crossings will be controlled by traffic signals.
Construction in Bala will occur in two phases to help reduce disruptions. The first phase, scheduled for June, will include excavation and installation of the crossing infrastructure. The second phase, expected in late summer or early fall, will involve installing signal control equipment and activating the crossings.
“Pedestrian crossings enhance walkability and the public realm as communities grow,” said James Steele, commissioner of public works. He noted the crossings will improve comfort and safety for pedestrians while maintaining traffic flow on District roads.
Drivers may encounter occasional lane closures and delays during construction. The district says updates will be posted through Municipal511 and on its website as work progresses.
