The Ontario government is investing over $1.3 million in two major heritage and tourism projects in Gravenhurst, supporting the restoration of RMS Segwun and upgrades at the Muskoka Steamships & Discovery Centre.
Through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the Muskoka Steamships Association will receive $830,875 to repair and upgrade Segwun, North America’s oldest operating steamship. Work will include structural wood replacement, weatherproofing, engine room improvements, and mechanical repairs, ensuring safe operations and increased passenger capacity.
The Discovery Centre will receive $500,000 to modernize its interpretive hall and install an interactive exhibit titled Love Muskoka, Sustain Muskoka. The exhibit will focus on environmental sustainability, climate change, cultural diversity, and Indigenous knowledge, while accessibility and energy-efficient upgrades are also planned.
Northern Economic Development Minister George Pirie said the funding ensures Segwun and the Centre remain top destinations, while Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP Graydon Smith highlighted the projects’ role in preserving regional heritage and boosting tourism.
